Dujon Sterling was one of Michael Beale’s first signings for Rangers but fans might have to wait a little longer to see the powerhouse defender in action.
The RTV coverage of the pre-season trip to Germany has been an interesting watch with a few noticeable absentees.
There was cause for concern when new recruit Dujon Sterling was one of the missing faces, however, these fears have been eased, as reported by The Rangers Review.
On paper, a right-back who can cover at centre-half might not have seemed like a priority this summer.
What Michael Beale has done though is upgrade the back-up options to James Tavernier and provide serious competition to the Gers skipper.
Adam Devine is a good player, and one that has earned his place in the squad but he isn’t Nathan Patterson.
Dujon Sterling is also a different type of player to either of the current right-back options for Rangers.
The Chelsea academy graduate is more of a marauder in the style of Alan Hutton than a natural creator like Tavernier.
Devine can match him in terms of energy and pace, but he isn’t quite yet there physically.
Where is Dujon Sterling on Rangers pre-season trip?
Eagle-eyed observers to the RTV content will have noticed that Sterling hasn’t made the trip to Germany, however, he will be back soon.
“Dujon Sterling has picked up calf injury and as a result will not travel to Germany for Rangers’ pre-season camp.
“The 23-year-old moved to Ibrox on a four-year contract on July 1 after his Chelsea deal expired.
“But life in Glasgow has not got off to an ideal start after Sterling picked up a calf knock during the first few days of pre-season training.
“The injury is understood to not be serious and he will likely return to training when the squad returns from Germany next week.”
Given our recent injury issues, the slightest hint of a problem and fans immediately fear the worst.
What Dujon Sterling’s role will be for Rangers when he is fit will be an interesting one.
Expect to see Devine in European squads but Sterling providing much-needed rest for Tavernier as he battles with Old Father Time.
Hopefully, Sterling is back soon and he can make up for lost time.
