Director expects bids for £3m ace but Rangers move may be off now

Wolves are expecting interest in Dion Sanderson with Rangers one of a number of clubs keeping tabs on the defender following his impressive loan spell at Birmingham City.

Then again, whether a move to Ibrox is still on the cards for the one-time Sunderland youngster remains to be seen.

Rangers have already signed Dujon Sterling this summer; another versatile, right-sided defender who can play at full-back or centre-half. Was Dion Sanderson, linked with a move to the Glasgow giants by the Scottish Sun, seen as an alternative to Sterling?

Or someone capable of playing alongside him in a new-look Gers backline?

Only time will tell.

Rangers like Wolves’ Dion Sanderson

Matt Hobbs, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ sporting director, is clearly expecting plenty of enquiries even if Rangers now decide to look elsewhere, with Birmingham keen to retain the £3 million-rated defender on a permanent basis after his eye-catching 2022/23 loan spell at St Andrews.

“They’ll have opportunities, the boys who have gone out and done well. There are clubs who have already expressed an interest in them,” Hobbs tells the Wolves website. “For loans or permanent moves.

“Ryan (Giles) had an unbelievable season at Middlesbrough. Luke (Cundle) went to Swansea and played a lot of football, especially towards the end of the season. Dion (Sanderson) played a pivotal role at Birmingham City.

“We are really pleased. It’s unheard of to have four players in the Championship perform to such high level and gain so much interest.”

With Sterling and Tavernier Rangers’ two first-team right-back options for next term, the smart money would be on Sanderson being brought in as a centre-half instead.

Then again, with Conor Goldson, John Souttar and Leon King all candidates to start in the right-sided centre-half berth currrently, spending £3 million on Sanderson would arguably be a bit of an odd move with other areas of Mick Beale’s squad in greater need of investment.
