Departing Premier League star hopes outgoing Rangers player will join him

Rangers have released defender Filip Helander and Pontus Jansson wants to see him rejoin former club Malmo.

The time has come for Rangers to overhaul their squad.

The title-winning side from 2021 has got a little stale and Michael Beale must now revamp his side.

A host of players are leaving on free transfer as goodbyes have been said to Allan McGregor, Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield and Alfredo Morelos.

Defender Helander is also leaving Rangers after an injury nightmare at Ibrox.

The Swede has missed the entire season and hasn’t been seen in a Rangers league game since the 10th of April last year.

Rangers just couldn’t justify giving Helander a new deal given that injury record and it was the right time to say goodbye.

Helander is already being linked with a new club though as Fotospor in Turkey claim that Samsunspor want to sign him.

The 30-year-old will seemingly attract interest – and former club Malmo may yet be interested too.

Pontus Jansson would love Filip Helander at Malmo

Helander hails from Malmo and came up through the club’s ranks before becoming a first-team player.

Helander did move on to Verona after 94 first-team outings for Malmo but he is still highly-regarded with his hometown club.

Malmo sporting director Daniel Andersson has stated that Helander is welcome to come back to the club for training this summer.

Malmo have already agreed to re-sign one of their old defenders with Brentford ace Pontus Jansson returning to Sweden.

Ditching the Premier League for a return to Malmo is a bold move from Jansson but he hopes Helander will join him.

As quoted by Fotboll Transfers in Sweden, Jansson first stated that he just hopes to see Helander back fit and playing again soon after more than a year out.

However, Jansson hopes that Helander will pick Malmo as his next club become one of Sweden’s top centre backs again.

“The most important thing for him is that he should be able to come back in peace and be healthy and play football again,” said Jansson. “I think that is priority one. It is clear that everyone hopes it will be Malmö, because Fille is one of Sweden’s best centre-backs when he is health,” he added.
