Jack Simpson, Nikola Katic, Stephen Kelly and Glenn Middleton have been told they can leave Rangers this summer as the Gers prepare for something of an exodus over the next few weeks.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson have added seven new first teamers to the Ibrox squad whilst the likes of Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun have moved on.

But there can be no doubt there is still some fat on the squad that needs trimmed and Rangers are expected to sort short-term and permanent deals for a range of players over the next few weeks.

Speaking about the evolution of the Rangers squad, the Athletic have analysed both what Rangers have added and perhaps what the club have got to lose.

Specifically, the ordinarily reputable outlet claims that four players in particular are free to discuss terms elsewhere and move on from Ibrox.

The report names Jack Simpson, Nikola Katic, Stephen Kelly and Glenn Middleton as the four players Rangers want to move on in this window.

There are also doubts regarding the perennially injured Filip Helander and Kemar Roofe, who are clearly under pressure to prove their fitness in the coming weeks and months.

But returning to those four players specifically, you’ll be hard-pressed to find many Rangers supporters who disagree that for the good of everybody it’s best they find a new home this season.

Jack Simpson still has three years remaining on his deal and his is a move which just fundamentally has not worked out.

At 24, the defender needs to play more first-team football and if Rangers can’t ship Jack out permanently a loan move is surely on the cards after 18 months in the background of the club.

Nikola Katic – a £2m signing from Slaven Bepulo in 2018 under Steven Gerrard – is a cult favourite at the club but has unfortunately slipped massively down the pecking order.

After proving his fitness with Hajduk Split last season, overtaking Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar, Filip Helander and even Leon King in the pecking order is no mean feat.

For Stephen Kelly and Glenn Middleton, two young Scottish players who at one time had Ibrox at their feet, their development has to come first and game-time is now a must in their careers.

Loan moves have defined the early part of their Rangers careers and perhaps it is time for both players to find a settled home to develop their football over the next few seasons.

Meanwhile, an ex-Man United kid has been opening up on his Rangers ambitions after being spotted at an open Ibrox training day.
