Rangers have been making waves in the early stages of the transfer window and, with the news that Connor Barron is next on Nils Koppen’s list, it will cause a ripple or two throughout Scottish football.

The squad is already looking a lot younger for next season and Philippe Clement will be glad not to have to rely on players who spend more time in the stands than on the pitch.

Connor Barron has been touted for an Ibrox move for some time but Rangers came perilously close to missing out on a target who now seems set to line up in Light Blue next season.

Rangers leave it late in Connor Barron bid

The initial report linking Barron claimed that the combative midfielder could be cutting short a holiday in Portugal to commence signing talks and to complete a medical.

Rangers News understands that talks were first held two weeks ago which could explain why Barron took no part in Scotland Under-21s fixtures against Austria and Turkey, despite being called up for the squad and skippering them in recent games.

A medical is also believed to have already been booked for this week after successful contract discussions.

Due to only being 21-years old, Rangers will have to pay a development fee for Barron, however, for a reported £500,000, Clement will be getting a bargain and a player who could anchor his midfield for the next 10 years.

Rangers avoid Lewis Ferguson repeat

Nothing official has been announced yet, but Rangers came close to missing their chance entirely to land one of Scotland’s most promising youngsters.

Interest from Italy has been strong for a while and the suggestions are that Barron was close to putting pen to paper with a Serie A side, following the path taken by former Dons teammate Lewis Ferguson

Unlike Ferguson, it looks like Rangers aren’t going to miss out on this occasion as Koppen targets another player who can contribute to the first team and be developed in the future too.

It’s not a secret that Rangers need more home-grown talent and they don’t come much better in terms of quality and value for money than Connor Barron.

Until he has the scarf above his head though…
