Chris Jack has revealed that Rangers have held talks with Bologna over signing Lewis Ferguson this summer.

The Light Blues have made a positive start to the summer transfer window, signing Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie and Ben Godfrey.

While Shankland and McCrorie have arrived on permanent deals, reuniting with Derek McInnes, Godfrey has been roped in on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta.

The England international may not be the only player Rangers sign from Italy this summer, as Jack has confirmed the club’s interest in luring Ferguson back to Ibrox.

Rangers hold initial discussions with Bologna for Ferguson

Ferguson has been linked with a return to Rangers all summer, especially after he saw his playing time at Bologna reduced last season.

However, there have been fears that the Scotland international may have priced himself out of a move to Govan after his performances for the Tartan Army at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nevertheless, Rangers are prepared to push forward with their interest in the midfielder, according to Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist revealed that the Andrew Cavenagh-led club held ‘initial discussions’ with Bologna over a potential deal for Ferguson weeks ago.

However, Jack warned Rangers fans against getting too excited about signing the former Aberdeen ace, as it would take a fee in excess of £15million to sign him this summer.

Speaking on the Rangers Review’s Monday Morning Briefing, he said: “That deal is going to be an expensive one. You’re looking at a significant transfer fee, roundabout £15m+.

“You’re looking at heavy wages, you’re considering Lewis Ferguson having other options, potentially in the Premier League, certainly in Italy, given how impressive he’s been over there.

“So, it’s not a case of ‘that’s a done deal’. We are way, way far away from that situation.

“I do know Rangers had initial discussions with Bologna a few weeks ago, but not at the ‘here’s money on the table’ stage.”

Ibrox club may break transfer record for Ferguson

Before linking up with the Scotland squad for the World Cup, Ferguson informed Bologna that he would like to take stock of his transfer options this summer.

While that represents good news for Rangers, it is worth noting that the Scot is prioritising a move to the Premier League.

However, the lure of captaining his boyhood club for years to come may be tempting for the 26-year-old.

The Ibrox club will have to break their transfer record to bring Ferguson back to Glasgow.

Rangers’ most expensive signing of all time remains Tore Andre Flo, who arrived from Chelsea for £12m in 2000.

Any permanent deal for Ferguson is certain to break that threshold, meaning Cavenagh has to break the bank to sign him.
