Championship linked Rangers star earning Ibrox redemption

As we approached the end of January, there was some conjecture surrounding the future of Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

Signed on a free in the summer, the 28-year-old ex-Sheffield United midfielder had struggled to adapt to life at Rangers and there were plenty of voices in the support doubting the big man’s credentials.

Links to Middlesbrough and a reunion with ex-Blades manager Chris Wilder also had plenty wondering if he’d see out this campaign.

But what a difference a couple of weeks has made for John Lundstram who is now front and centre for supporters, with his name ringing out from within the crowd.

A powerful runner and comfortable passer, Lundstram has finally begun to find his feet and form at Rangers and is now becoming something of a cult hero within the support.

A likeable and popular character within the squad, Lundstram has had to bide his time under new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst but has now cemented himself in the Dutchman’s thinking.

But it has been something of a rocky road in Lunny’s first season at Ibrox and credit must go to John for overcoming the doubters and beginning to win over the support.

Rewind to that Europa League Playoff against Alashkert, where Lundstram saw red for two quick yellow cards and struggled with the Ibrox crowd, and there were plenty who believed the midfielder wasn’t cut out for life at the Gers.

Fast forward to the present day and it’s somewhat poetic that in the same competition – albeit in the knockout stages after Christmas – Lundstram earned his Rangers redemption.

The thumping left-foot effort in the 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund symbolised the resurrection of a player reborn and the progress John has made at Ibrox.

That goal won over many of the naysayers whilst winning that 50/50 against Jude Bellingham also left an impression on the Rangers support.

We spoke earlier in the season about how winning over the Gers support would be the biggest challenge of John Lundstram’s career.

Now keeping the likes of Glen Kamara out of the side, that defensive midfield berth is his to lose and it’s a challenge John has – in his own style – not shied away from.
