Rangers have spent a decent amount of money this summer, Michael Beale was excited for the window opening and he can’t have any complaints ahead of the Champions League play-offs.
With an effective player trading model, the board and investors shouldn’t need to put their hands in their pockets and it appears as if self-sufficiency isn’t far away.
Speaking as part of Rangers build up for the visit of Servette, Michael Beale has confirmed that the summer’s spend has been a sensible one and that Champions League football isn’t a factor in paying back the expenditure.
Rangers transfers not reliant on Champions League qualification
When asked if the finances on offer in the Champions League were critical to being able to build the squad he wants and for his transfer business moving forwards, the Gers gaffer said:
“Financially, this summer, the money going out and the money coming in will even itself out.
“So, it’s not like we haven’t gone to the well and in terms of asking for loads of finance to rebuild the squad.
“We’ve been very clever in our selection and the way we’ve done it in terms of the players that have left.
“Financially, for any club, the Champions League finances is the biggest finance you can get in club football.
“I think if we do well the next couple of years in Europe there’s the new competition that’s coming out as well so there’s a load of bonuses there as well.”
The transfer budget might not directly be linked to qualifying for the Champions League but what it does do is allow a situation like the one we have seen this summer when the money brought in can be spent.
It is almost an incentive for Michael Beale.
If you are successful and the team is successful, the players will be worth more money which means that there will be more to spend.
This summer, if the players linked with exits all depart and the reported fees are correct, the Gers boss could have nearly £15m being brought in between Glen Kamara, Fashion Sakala, Antonio Colak, Scott Wright, Ross McCrorie’s sell on clause and Malik Tillman’s option to buy clause cancellation.
Other than Tillman, none of these players were guaranteed starters or key players either.
Michael Beale doesn’t need to see off Servette and ensure Champions League football to sign players for Rangers or to spend money but it certainly helps his cause and where else are we going to make £25m so quickly.
