Champions League outfit could deliver second Rangers transfer blow amid defender links

Rangers hunt for a new centre-back goes on as the hours tick away ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

The Gers have shipped out the underperforming Ben Davies on loan to Birmingham City and are looking for someone more suitable to replace the St Andrews bound centre-back.

Only, finding that replacement is a task proving more difficult than Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen might like.

Rangers appear to have been priced out of a move for Almeria’s Kaiky, whilst Hoffenheim defender Stanley Nsoki is reportedly lining up a transfer to Lille.

Missing out on targets is a familiar feeling to Rangers in this transfer window and now Champions League side Stade Brestois 29 could be about to deliver double Ibrox heartbreak.

Bamo Meïte the latest Rangers defender target

Rangers have been linked with a surprise move for Marseille centre-back Bamo Meïte.

The 22-year-old Ivorian defender spent last season on loan at L’OM and completed a permanent deal to move to the club from Lorient this summer.

But now Bamo Meïte could be on the move again with Rangers one of three clubs reportedly tailing the defender.

According to Canal Plus journalist @Adammser, Rangers have expressed an interest in Meïte alongside RC Lens and Stade Brestois 29.

It’s claimed that whilst discussions are ongoing, there has been no official offer lodged for Meïte as things stand.

Translated, the tweet reads:

“The central defender is the object of much desire: Lens, Brest and Glasgow Rangers are very interested.

“Discussion in progress between the clubs and the player (who is ready to leave)

“No offers received by OM for the moment.”

Double Ibrox Champions League transfer blow?

Rangers made no bones about their intentions to re-sign Abdallah Sima from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

The 23-year-old attacker was a star player for team last season but the Ibrox side’s failure to reach the Champions League proved a major obstacle to getting a deal done.

Having qualified for the Champions League this season, Ligue 1 outfit Brest were a much more attractive prospect to Brighton as they looked to progress Sima’s development.

Sima would then move to the French side and as Rangers and Brest prepare to do battle over Bamo Meïte, Gers fans will wonder if Champions League football might once again make a telling difference.

Whilst the money is huge, the finance of Champions League football is only part of the issue when it comes to missing out on the prestige of the competition.
