Champions League hitman deals Rangers £4m blow with maiden international strike

Rangers fans maybe expected another striker in the door before the transfer window closed.

The Gers added Moroccan youngster Hamza Igamane to their ranks this summer following the departure of Kemar Roofe, with Danilo and Cyriel Dessers the club’s other striker options.

With questions now being raised over the fitness of Brazilian striker Danilo, the Gers look a tad short in the final third and perhaps Clement will rue not getting another hitman in the door.

It might also not have been for the want of trying.

Rangers were linked to a number of hitmen this summer and now one Champions League marksman is showing the Gers what they’re missing on the international stage.

Albion Rrahmani continues rich vein of form with Kosovo

Albion Rrahmani was one of the most prominent transfer links of Rangers’ summer window.

The Rapid Bucharest forward was routinely mentioned alongside the Gers, with the likes of Benfica, Aston Villa and Napoli also linked.

But after Rangers’ costly failure to reach the Champions League, Rrahmani was eventually sold elsewhere as Czech side Sparta Prague came calling.

The striker then played a role in getting Sparta into the tournament, scoring in a 2-0 second leg win which saw the side qualify 4-0 on aggregate against Swedish club Malmo.

It’s been a bright start on domestic duties too, with Albion Rrahmani netting on his Czech First League debut against Hradec Kralove.

That bright form has also continued into the international scene, with Kosovan hitman Albion Rrahmani scoring for his nation in a 4-0 romp over Cyprus this week.

The strike was Rrahmani’s first goal for the Kosovan national team on his seventh appearance and another sign of progress as the 24-year-old continues to develop.

It’s a goal which also sends a reminder to Rangers of what they’re missing with the Ibrox side failing to match the record-breaking €5m (£4m) Sparta paid to bring Rrahmani to Prague.

Rangers count cost of Champions League failure

There are a number of Rangers targets which didn’t come to fruition in the wake of the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Albion Rrahmani may well have been one, but Rangers also missed out on Brighton forward Abdallah Sima in the wake of the disappointment.

The Senegalese striker has instead joined Ligue 1 club Brest, who will compete in the Champions League this season.

There remains substantial scrutiny on leading Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers, who has five goals for the season already but who has been found wanting in a number of big games.

Brazilian striker Danilo is also returning from a serious knee injury and was seen on crutches in Glasgow airport at the beginning of the international break.

As a result the forward has not been included in this season’s Europa League squad and there are big fears that the £6m striker has suffered yet another serious injury.

Summer signing Hamza Igamane joined Rangers in a £1.7m deal from FAR Rabat earlier in the window and impressed in a brief cameo in the 3-0 Old Firm defeat to Celtic.
