Celtic are now not expected to continue with the deal to sign Penrice, according to Give Me Sport journalist Ben Jacobs.
The Hoops did make an initial enquiry, but have not got back to AEK Athens, and are not expected to make another bid.
This can potentially open the door for Rangers, who have shown an interest in the 27-year-old, but have not initiated contact with his club.
Penrice still has two more years left on his contract at the Greek club, so they are in no real hurry to cash in on him.
Also, he only moved there last summer, so he is still someone who’s rated highly and would be the first choice if he stays put.

Jayden Meghoma has returned to Brentford following his loan spell, and there is nobody in the academy ready to challenge for a first-team role.
