One Celtic fan’s meltdown over Rangers’ imminent sale of Calvin Bassey to Ajax has went viral online as the Ibrox side look set to bank major cash for the Nigerian international.
It’s looking increasingly likely that Bassey, 22, will soon be announced as a new Ajax player after a startling upturn in form over the course of last season for Rangers.
From the defensive frailties of Sparta Prague in the early stages of the Europa League campaign to dominating the backline in the Europa League Final against Frankfurt, it’s hard to remember such a meteoric rise in such a short period of time in a Rangers shirt.
That progress for both club and country is set to be recognised this window too as Rangers line up a record breaking sale that begins around £18.5m (€22m) and could reach an eventual £23m (€27m).
With an sell-on included in the sale it could top even that and eventually go on to beat ex-Celtic star’s Kieran Tierney’s Scottish record £25m sale to Arsenal in 2019.
Combine the sale of Calvin Bassey with those of Joe Aribo and Nathan Patterson and not only is Rangers’ player trading model kicking into life, but it’s catching up with work done by Celtic over the last few seasons, and then some.
All three of these players cost a combined £500k in transfer fees – with Patterson being a development player – and it’s certainly shattered the illusion Rangers are a club on the decline, heading for administration or in desperate need of sales to keep the lights on.
To Celtic fans of a certain vintage and desperate bloggers this was a notion which propped up an entire economy but now Rangers fans have been chuckling as many of our rivals try and make sense of this latest deal.

One Parkhead supporter decided to phone in to Clyde Superscoreboard [18/07/22] to air his frustrations and the clip has since gone viral in Scottish footballing circles.
“Hugh (Keevins)?” Said John the Celtic fan.
“Do you think he’s worth £20m? I never asked you that (about Ajax paying the fee), I asked you do you think he’s worth £20m?
“Hugh, who made the mistake up in Ross County to give away a goal? Who made the mistake at Motherwell at the halfway line to give away a goal?
“Ye want the other one? Europa Cup Final, Goldson lets the ball go and the guy runs across Bassey.
“The guy’s a liability Hugh and he’ll get found out when he goes to Ajax.
“He’s never worth £20m. (He’s worth) £5m.”
This is gold. The insistence Bassey is hopeless, the seethe, the completely lack of awareness regarding the entire thing.
