Celtic pursuing £6.3m-rated Rangers linked Ekuban - report

Celtic are reportedly pursuing £6.3m-rated Trabzonspor striker Caleb Ekuban, who has previously been touted as a possible replacement for Alfredo Morelos at Rangers.

Turkish outlet Fanatik claims Celtic were recently unsuccessful with a bid of around €5 million (£4.5m) for the Ghana international.

However, it’s insisted that they haven’t given up their pursuit of the 26-year-old, despite splashing out a reported £4.5m [BBC Sport] to sign Albian Ajeti from West Ham last week.

Fanatik claims Trabzonspor are looking for €7 million (£6.3m) for Ekuban, so the Hoops will need to up their offer considerably to land the player.

Celtic reportedly pursue Rangers linked striker – Verdict

Rangers were first linked to Ekuban by another Turkish outlet, Fotospor, who claimed back in March that the Gers and Lazio were interested in his signature.

It was suggested at the time that the former Leeds United forward was a potential like-for-like replacement for Alfredo Morelos, should the Ibrox talisman be sold during the summer window.

Since then, Steven Gerrard has added two new strikers to his squad in Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten but El Bufalo’s future is still uncertain.

Should the Colombian international be sold in the comings weeks, it’s possible that Rangers would return to the market for another forward.

However, Ekuban isn’t a prolific marksman and his return of five goals in 22 Turkish Super Lig appearances last season doesn’t suggest he would be worth a £6.3m outlay.

If Celtic are still genuinely interested despite already bringing in Ajeti, though, it could suggest they are planning for life after Odsonne Edouard.
