Rangers are on the hunt for midfield talent this January but could a recent serious injury to John Fleck warn the Ibrox side off recent links to the Sheffield United star?

Gers boss Michael Beale has admitted the club are looking to strengthen in the middle of the park with Kris Boyd claiming that he’d be placing the former Ibrox youngster at the top of the list.

John Fleck looks a promising signing on paper for a number of reasons, with the 31-year-old’s experience capable of helping to replace the injured Steven Davis in the middle of the pitch and the player out of contract in the summer.

Fleck is also a homegrown player and Rangers have hinted that they are looking for the best homegrown Scottish players to help boost European squad registrations in the seasons to come.

But whilst that sort of planning is all well and good, a serious leg break earlier in the season will surely see the nerves jangling in the Ibrox boardroom.

John Fleck injury history raises Rangers transfer doubts

The Rangers recruitment team are under intense pressure after a series of underwhelming transfer windows and a series of high-profile injuries directly impacting the team this season.

Rangers have been ravaged by major injuries this campaign and there can be no argument that the club’s season has been badly hampered by them.

There are several high-profile and high-paid players in the Rangers squad who have spent the bulk of their Ibrox careers on the treatment table and John Fleck does trigger a similar alarm.

A talented player who knows the club and offers experience and quality in the middle of the park on a free, there are plenty of reasons why Rangers should pursue John Fleck.

But those injury problems are a genuine issue and if the Rangers board take a risk on the player they can expect a backlash from the fans should they come to the fore after signing an Ibrox deal.

Meanwhile, one former Rangers star has announced his retirement from football.
