Brighton technical director and Rangers Hall of Famer Davie Weir has broken his silence on the Ibrox side’s move for Seagulls attacker Abdallah Sima.

The Gers have announced a season-long loan deal for the Senegalese international, 22, as he looks to continue his development in the men’s game.

Having paid £7m to sign Abdallah Sima back in 2021, back then Brighton viewed the attacker as a project player and that’s been backed up by two loan moves to Stoke City and Angers.

Brighton director Davie Weir to monitor Abdallah Sima at Rangers

Amid much chatter regarding an option-to-buy which – as per reports – does not appear to have been inserted into the deal, Davie Weir hinted that Brighton are hoping the loan move to Rangers simply aids Abdallah Sima’s development so he can come back and make a Premier League impact.

The former Rangers centre-back also claims that he’ll be monitoring the progress of Abdallah Sima closely as he looks to make an impression at Ibrox next season.

“Abdallah had a really strong finish to last season in France, after initially being disrupted by injury — but he once again showed his ability when he did play, and the potential he offers,” Davie Weir told the Brighton website.

“We are hoping he can get a good run of games with Rangers this coming season, both domestically and in European competition, and we will keep a close eye on his progress.”

High hopes at Ibrox this season

Rangers fans will be hoping that Abdallah Sima can make the kind of impact at Ibrox that he was doing at Slavia Prague prior to his move to Brighton in 2021.

Rangers came up against the striker in that infamous Europa League clash and if the club can get that player for a season then he may well make a big contribution to the forthcoming season.

As for Davie Weir, the former Scotland international centre-back joined Rangers as a veteran centre-back in 2007 and across five years at Ibrox grew into a Hall of Famer who picked up eight major honours and played a key role in the run to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final.

The defender also returned as Mark Warburton’s assistant between 2015 and 2017, with Weir holding his current role at Brighton since April 2019.
