The Daily Record reports Brentford have joined Rangers with interest in signing Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson this summer.

The Gers were linked with the Scotland U21 international over the weekend, with the Scottish Sun claiming both he and Livingston’s Lyndon Dykes are high on Steven Gerrard’s transfer wishlist.

It’s unlikely that the Dons will be keen on selling a key player to another Premiership club, but the Record reports that Brentford are also showing firm interest.

The English Championship outfit have allegedly scouted Ferguson on a number of occasions this season and the player himself is said to be aware of their interest.

It’s further claimed that a club record fee in excess of £1.75m plus add-ons would be required to convince Aberdeen to enter into negotiations, as with the player contracted until 2024, they are under no pressure to sell.

The Bees are currently fourth in the Championship table but do not yet know whether they will get a chance to earn promotion to the Premier League amid the global health crisis.

Verdict

Despite being only 20, Ferguson has already made close to 100 senior club appearances, beginning his career at Hamilton Accies and joining Aberdeen in 2018.

He’s a combative player who is perhaps still a little rough around the edges but has significant potential.

Given that both his father Derek and uncle Barry played in successful Rangers teams, there could be a draw to Ibrox that Brentford cannot match.

However, a fee of several million pounds could be a stumbling block for the Gers, while the Dons are likely to do everything they can to avoid a repeat of the Ryan Jack transfer of 2017.

It will be interesting to see how this chase develops across the summer.
