Rangers legend Steven Davis has admitted that he has spoken to the club over a potential new deal, with the midfielder currently out of contract.

The 38-year-old is still with the club, training as he recovers from a ruptured cruciate ligament, and his contract expired at the end of last season.

Given the severity of his injury, as well as his age, he may choose to retire from the game, but it seems that he is keeping all of his options open, and could even sign another deal to continue playing for Rangers.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Davis claimed that whilst he is currently focused on his recovery, both he and the club could be open to talks over a deal.

“There’s been discussions in the background with Rangers but nothing really nailed down at any point,” he stated.

“The club is very open to having that conversation I believe but it’s just important that I focus on rehab at this minute in time to give myself an opportunity to try and play.

“I think whenever I do call it a day that will be the time to see what doors open and what opportunities arise.”

Should Rangers keep Steven Davis?

Depending on the length of his injury, Davis could still be a useful player to have in the squad despite his age.

The Northern Irish hero has made 360 appearances for the club over the years, with 16 of these coming last season prior to his injury, and as a backup and a leader, he could still offer a lot to Michael Beale.

However, a decision may not be taken until a possible return date can be determined, and given that Beale has fixated on bringing in younger players, Davis might have to follow the likes of Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos out of the door for good.

If Davis does decide to retire, then keeping him as a coach could be an option if he is keen to stay. Someone with his knowledge could be very helpful for the younger players at Rangers to learn from, and keeping him at the club in a summer where a lot of experienced stars have departed could help Beale with what is a big squad transition.
