Barcelona linked as Rangers reportedly bid £5m+ for Euro international

Rangers could face competition from Barcelona in the hunt for Besiktas full-back Ridvan Yilmaz amid claims the Ibrox side have officially launched a bid for the player.

Reports emerged earlier in the week that Rangers had a legitimate interest in the 21-year-old left-back, who has six caps for the Turkey national team.

This comes after the Ibrox side sold Nigerian international full-back Calvin Bassey, 22, to Dutch giants Ajax in a monumental €23m deal earlier this week.

Ibrox manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst had hinted after the 3-1 win over West Ham that Rangers could move to shore up the position with Borna Barisic the only recognised full-back in the squad.

This is despite the Ibrox side signing Liverpool centre-back Ben Davies on a £4m deal, the ex-Preston star starting his career in the position.

Rangers interest in Ridvan Yilmaz appears legitimate

For all intents and purposes, it appears that Rangers do have a legitimate interest in the player with the story originating in the Daily Mail and being clarified by the likes of Derek Clark of the Rangers Review.

It is now a major news story in Turkey, although there is some conjecture regarding how much Rangers are willing to pay or if they have even bid at all.

In the UK, the initial suggestion was that Rangers wanted to pay £4m for the player with some claiming that the minimum Besiktas want is £5.1m (€6m) and others that the Ibrox side have bid £3.8m.

This would certainly be in keeping with Derek Clark’s claims that the two clubs are yet to meet an agreement over a transfer fee.

There have even been claims from within Turkey that Rangers have gone as far as to offer the £5.1m with a sell-on fee included in any deal for Ridvan Yilmaz.

This comes from Fanatik journalist Gokmen Ozcan, who also claims that Rangers have been in negotiation with the player for the last 10 days.

This tweet also makes mention of interest from fellow Europa League Finalists Eintracht Frankfurt, who were extensively linked earlier in the window.

Back then the clubs were unable to agree a deal, with the likes of Lyon and Torino also linked to Ridvan Yilmaz and the Besiktas chairman stubbornly insisting on a £8.5m (€10m) asking price.

At the very least, with Ridvan Yilmaz in the final year of his contract, it appears Besiktas have climbed down from these early demands but if Rangers want the player they may need to move quickly.

According to the Fútbol Total, La Liga giants Barcelona are also monitoring the player’s situation as an alternative to Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso.

Meanwhile, imminent Rangers exit claims appear to have been quashed by one player’s appearance in a pre-season friendly.
