Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Rangers star Calvin Bassey as they hunt for suitable left-back cover for Lucas Digne.
That’s according to reputable outlet the Telegraph, who claim Steven Gerrard is considering a reunion with the player he brought to Ibrox from Leicester City last season.
The report comes after the Villa Park side signed Brazilian playmaker Phillipe Coutinho from Barcelona with a big transfer window expected in the West Midlands.
Villa are reportedly looking to sign a player to provide suitable competition to French international Digne, who signed for the Villains on a £25m deal in January.
Calvin Bassey is the first name mentioned by the Telegraph, with Scotland international and Bologna teenager Aaron Hickey also namedropped.
For Calvin Bassey to be named amongst these two left-backs shows the immense progress made by the Nigerian international at Rangers this season.
Rangers’ Calvin Bassey linked to Aston Villa
Aston Villa are a billionaire-backed Premier League side on the rise and being managed by Steven Gerrard, Calvin Bassey appears an easy link to make.
But the Telegraph are generally well-informed on their transfer stories so it’s interesting that the source of these links is from that newspaper.
Rangers are in a strong position when it comes to the full-back – who can also play centre-half – given he is contracted to the club until 2024 and Villa would be expected to stump up for the player.
Many Rangers fans would like to see the club’s position strengthened when it comes to the Italian-born 22-year-old with the Gers’ Young Player of the Year given a new deal.
Interest in Calvin Bassey from Aston Villa stands as a testament to the Rangers star’s progress and the club may well regret not moving to sign him up.
Meanwhile, another Rangers defender has officially announced plans to depart the club in the summer.
