Arsenal defender wanted by promoted club as Rangers move unlikely

Rangers face a real battle to sign Arsenal defender Auston Trusty with Ipswich Town now joining the race for his signature.

The Gers brought in a new defender on Wednesday; we say ‘new’, but it was very much a familiar face.

Free agent Leon Balogun has returned to Ibrox on a one-year deal having only left Rangers last summer.

An injury to young talent Leon King meant Rangers moved quickly to bring in a stop-gap addition to Michael Beale’s defensive ranks.

Rangers fans may still think there is another addition coming though.

Beale has Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Ben Davies and now Balogun, although there are lingering questions about the future of Davies.

A left-footed centre back has seemingly been a target all summer amid links to Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo.

The former Chelsea man isn’t the only man on the radar though with Rangers also fancy Auston Trusty.

Rangers could now see Auston Trusty join Ipswich Town

Reports from the Daily Mail in May suggested that Rangers were trying to strike a deal for Trusty.

Hopes were raised when Football London reported that Trusty would be sold by Arsenal this summer after a strong loan spell at Birmingham City.

However, Football Scotland noted that Rangers were backing away from Trusty because they were too far away from Arsenal’s asking price.

The rumours linking Trusty with a move to Rangers have died down of late and he could now make a move to the English Championship.

The East Anglian Daily Times report that Ipswich Town are now looking to sign Trusty after winning promotion from League One.

Ipswich are looking to spend this summer and have already snapped up midfielder Jack Taylor and striker George Hirst.

The Tractor Boys appear upwardly mobile under Kieran McKenna and they will be an attractive proposition to many players – potentially including Trusty.

A move to Portman Road would see Trusty link up with former Rangers duo George Edmundson and Sone Aluko, with the Gers now looking unlikely to sign the American international.
