Amiens president Bernard Joannin has claimed that Rangers linked midfielder Bongani Zungu is primed to leave his club on loan, as quoted by the Glasgow Times.

In July, the Gers were said to be in advanced discussions over a potential £3.8 million transfer for the South Africa international [Scotsman], but amid rumours that the player was unfit, the deal appeared to collapse.

There have been no further updates in the last few weeks and it’s presumed that Gerrard and co. are no longer interested.

It seems Zungu still won’t be playing for Amiens in Ligue 2 next season, though, with Joannin claiming he is close to securing a temporary switch elsewhere.

“Bongani Zungu has been offered to a club to go on loan,” he said, as quoted by the Glasgow Times.

“It’s in progress.”

Rangers linked Zungu set to leave Amiens on loan – Verdict

With the link between Rangers and Zungu going cold and negotiations open for a loan move elsewhere, it now seems almost certain that the 27-year-old won’t be coming to Ibrox.

In some ways that’s a shame for Gers supporters.

Zungu is an experienced international who has played at a good level in France and his playing style may have added much-needed dynamism to Steven Gerrard’s midfield.

However, if the player wasn’t in peak condition, the Gers were right not to go through with the deal.

With the season now well underway, the club needs to be recruiting players capable of coming in and making an immediate impact and given Zungu’s lack of a proper pre-season, splashing close to £4 million for him would have been too big a risk.
