Luton midfielder Allan Campbell is as a player that Rangers should look at during this summer’s transfer window as Ross Wilson begins to rebuild Michael Beale’s squad.

In Steven Davis and Scott Arfield, Rangers have a lot of experience potentially leaving the club in the summer.

Add to this the speculation linking Glen Kamara with a move away and the need for midfield reinforcements becomes all the more apparent. A player with homegrown status is also preferable to meet UEFA quotas.

Allan Campbell left Motherwell for Luton Town in 2021 for a development fee and Rangers didn’t make a move because Steven Gerrard’s midfield was already fully loaded. Now would be the right time to return though.

The Scotland Under-21 international clearly didn’t want to hamper his progress by sitting on the bench, or in the stands amid links to Ibrox and chose playing time over prestige.

After his transfer to the Championship, he has shown that he can consistently perform at a higher level and his form has been pivotal in Luton’s unlikely assault on the Premier League.

Campbell should be considered and it is a move that has been endorsed by an SPFL recruitment analyst speaking to Rangers News who agrees that the 24-year old is someone who would suit Michael Beale’s Rangers system as the “energiser” in midfield.

What would Allan Campbell bring to Rangers midfield?

Luton star Allan Campbell would be perfect for Beale’s Rangers with his high intensity style and natural fitness in particular being attractive assets and, with early comparisons to N’Golo Kante, he could well be the fresh legs that we need in an area of the park that we have often looked tired in this season.

Beale has explained before how a midfield should be constructed in terms of personality and skillset and it gave a fascinating insight into how we should expect to see Rangers line up under his stewardship, via The Athletic:

“He can be an energiser. That’s classic (Jordan) Henderson at the minute. Someone a bit old-fashioned, who works the channels and is very energetic, up and down.

“He can be a passer. (His now-Rangers boss Steven) Gerrard went from an energiser to a passer at the end of his career. A magician would be like (Philippe) Coutinho. They like to ride in between the lines like a David Silva, (who) can receive it and twist and turn.”

Beale also details a destroyer and spider in his explanation of midfield roles. Each Rangers player fits into a role(s) they might fill under this philosophy. Todd Cantwell is a magician or spider to Nico Raskin’s passer so, having someone like Campbell could be successful.

Money, as always though, will decide who joins Michael Beale’s revolution.
