Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has provided an update on the club’s interest in Rangers outcast Alex Lowry.
Lowry was involved in two of Rangers’ pre-season games against Ajax and Birmingham City during the summer but hasn’t been involved in a match since the trip to St Andrew’s.
He’s been playing with Rangers B amid speculation he could be on the move to Carlisle United, as per Football Insider earlier this week.
Their report went as far as saying Carlisle had launched a bid for Lowry but since then, it’s all went a bit quiet and Lowry’s future is uncertain with just hours of the window remaining.
Now, Simpson has cleared up Carlisle’s stance on Lowry throughout the summer and what the playmaker thought about a potential move south of the border.
Lowry to Carlisle link addressed
Simpson admits that in July, there was talk of Carlisle pursuing a deal to sign Lowry from Rangers but the midfielder chose not to sign and declared he’d rather stay at Rangers.
Simpson told News & Star: “We had a conversation about Alex Lowry but we’re probably going back maybe about a month.
“Alex Lowry doesn’t want to leave Glasgow Rangers, so it got nipped in the bud then, simple as that. He’s a player I like, I think he’s a good footballer.
“I think you have to have a certain system to fit him in, but I think he’s a good footballer that could have fitted in – but he chose not to come to Carlisle United.”
Lowry’s future uncertain
Lowry’s future at Rangers remains uncertain but it seems peculiar that he’d like to stay at Ibrox beyond tonight’s transfer deadline.
It’s evident game time will be at a premium for him under Clement yet there is no sign of the youngster moving out of Govan before time runs out.
It is transfer deadline day though and things can happen fast. A loan move out of Rangers may yet be possible but as yet, there’s been nothing to suggest that.
What we do know now is that, as confirmed by Simpson, he won’t be heading down the motorway to sign for Carlisle United.
