£5m defender may wish he’d joined Rangers as Premier League nightmare gets even worse

Rangers missed out on signing Auston Trusty and the defender’s season with Sheffield United is going from bad to worse.

Rangers were linked with a number of centre backs over the summer but few expected Leon Balogun to be the man coming in.

The Nigerian returned to Ibrox in a reunion with Michael Beale, offering an experienced option at the back.

The move did feel like something of a disappointment though, especially after rumours surrounding a deal for Auston Trusty.

Trusty had excelled on loan at Birmingham City and Arsenal seemed ready to cash in.

Rangers were thought to be keen on a £2million move but he ended up completing a £5million move to Sheffield United instead.

Auston Trusty’s season goes from bad to worse

Well, less than a year on, we would forgive Trusty for wishing that he had joined Rangers.

Trusty’s Sheffield United side are seven points adrift of safety and keep losing heavily.

8-0 to Newcastle United was bad enough but the Blades have now lost their last two home games 5-0.

Sunday’s hammering by Brighton and Hove Albion was in-part inspired by an early Mason Holgate red card.

Trusty came off the bench in the first half but couldn’t stop the flow of goals as the Seagulls ran riot at Bramall Lane.

Trusty even had the pain of deflecting Simon Adingra’s strike into his own net to make it 5-0, really rubbing salt into the wounds.

Sheffield United look doomed right now and Trusty may well be playing Championship football again next season.

Meanwhile, Rangers are going for a title and are playing Europa League action – a far cry from a relegation battle.

Rangers’ interest in Trusty may well have disappeared along with Beale, leaving the defender to wonder what could have been.
