35-year-old reportedly in Luton Town talks after Rangers rumours

The route to Rangers appears to be shut for Asmir Begovic as he now considers a move to join Luton Town.

Rangers have been linked with goalkeepers for months now with Allan McGregor’s time at Ibrox clearly coming to an end.

McGregor’s departure has been confirmed after months of rumours about Rangers’ goalkeeping plans.

One of the names linked ahead of the January window was Asmir Begovic.

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook reported on Twitter at the end of December that Rangers were keen on landing Asmir Begovic.

The Bosnian stopper has spent the last two seasons as backup goalkeeper at Everton, making just four Premier League appearances.

The notion was that Rangers would bring in the 35-year-old to effectively take over from McGregor.

Rangers didn’t strike a January deal for Begovic though and any idea of moving for him this summer can be ended despite his availability.

Begovic is a free agent this summer with Everton confirming that he has rejected a new deal to stay at Goodison Park.

The 35-year-old has decided that it’s time to move on but he surely won’t be heading to Rangers.

Firstly, Rangers have already moved in another direction by signing Jack Butland on a free transfer.

Butland is five years younger than Begovic and will be seen as a more long-term option for the Gers.

Rangers also have a backup stopper in Robby McCrorie and there is just no need for Begovic to be on the Ibrox radar anymore.

Begovic also appears to be in line for a Premier League move.

The Telegraph claimed just a few days ago that Begovic has held talks over a move to Luton Town.

Begovic could be given a starting role with the Hatters, who want some Premier League experience after clinching promotion to the top flight.

That would surely appeal to Begovic and a potential move to Luton makes much more sense than those Rangers rumours.
