Former Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster, who was linked with a move to Rangers last summer, failed to score a single goal in his first season at Sheffield United following a £23.5m move from Anfield.
In June 2020, the Scottish Sun reported that Steven Gerrard was looking to bring Brewster to Ibrox on loan for the 2020/21 season.
It was thought that the Gers manager would use his Anfield connections to try to lure the highly-rated England youth international to Glasgow.
However, Liverpool opted to sell Brewster instead, and Rangers stood little chance up against a host of Premier League clubs.
Sheffield United eventually won the race with a club-record offer of £23.5m [The Guardian] and Brewster penned a five-year deal at Bramall Lane.
He was described as Chris Wilder’s priority target and there was plenty of excitement about his arrival in South Yorkshire.
Yet, things didn’t go to plan at all for the 21-year-old during his first season.
He was fit for pretty much the entire campaign and made 30 appearances across all competitions, including 14 starts.
However, he failed to score a single goal or to register an assist.
Those are painful and surprising stats for a player who has been so highly thought of and who netted on multiple occasions in pre-season for Liverpool prior to his transfer.
By the end of the season, Wilder had lost his job as boss and United had been relegated to the Championship after finishing rock bottom of the top-flight.
Rangers only ended up bringing in one loan player last summer in Bongani Zungu, with Gerrard eventually turning to Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten in August to strengthen his attacking options.
The move for Roofe, in particular, was a big success, as he netted 18 goals and notched three assists despite costing a fraction of what the Blades forked out for Brewster.
