Rangers may be moving closer to signing Fluminense left back Jefte after loan club APOEL moved to sign a replacement for the Brazilian.

Rangers have been linked with so many left backs this month amid questions over the futures of Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz.

Barisic will be out of contract this summer whilst Yilmaz continues to be linked with a return to Turkey.

Rangers are now mooing in for a new, long-term left back addition – and there are encouraging signs surrounding a deal this week.

APOEL find replacement for Rangers target Jefte

Reports over the weekend suggested that Rangers have agreed to sign left back Jefte from Fluminense.

Jefte is currently on loan at APOEL in Cyprus, meaning this is a slightly complicated move.

Fluminense would need to recall Jefte and send him to Rangers, but the deal needs to be rubber-stamped by APOEL as they prepare to lose the Brazilian.

Protathlima in Cyprus now report that APOEL will be due a fee of around €500,000 (£425,000) from Fluminense if they cancel his loan move, which is backed up by Sportime.

Crucially though, it’s added that APOEL have agreed to sign a new left back in ex-Velez Sarsfield talent Lautaro Cano.

It’s stated that Cano is expected to arrive in Cyprus soon, surely with the idea of replacing Jefte in this APOEL side.

The Argentinian, 21, is a former Argentina Under-17 international and his contract has expired according to reports in his homeland.

APOEL are now moving to secure Cano and make sure that Ricardo Sa Pinto has a replacement for Jefte secured quickly.

The signing of a new left back indicates that APOEL expect Jefte to be moving on soon and Rangers will surely be his destination amid growing rumours in recent days.

Jefte has impressed as an attacking force with three goals and four assists in 18 games this season whilst possessing major potential at 20.

This is a fascinating signing for Rangers and the news from Cyprus suggests that APOEL have accepted losing their first-choice left back to Philippe Clement.
