Rangers have been tipped to make a sensational return for Man United winger Amad Diallo this summer as the Ivorian teenager is backed to prove himself at Ibrox.

That’s according to ex-Rangers and Premier League right-back Alan Hutton, who believes that the 19-year-old didn’t meet expectations during a six-month stint last season.

Rangers signed Amad Diallo on a six-month loan deal from Man United in the January window but the move must go down as a failure given the club’s domestic capitulation.

Both Amad and Aaron Ramsey flattered to deceive despite their big profiles and as a result there is much scrutiny on the club in this transfer window.

You only need to look at social media to see swathes of supporters frustrated with the club’s stagnant transfers business over the last few windows.

The return of Amad Diallo has been mooted by supporters – and rumoured amid a series of social media posts from the Man United winger – after a solid end to his spell at Ibrox.

Alan Hutton tips Amad Diallo for Rangers return

There’s a feeling that Rangers and Amad could be a good fit after having an initial period to settle and this is something echoed by Alan Hutton ahead of the new season.

“I don’t think he reached the heights that a lot of people were expecting,” said Hutton [Football Insider].

“I’m not going to lie I thought he’d have more of an impact, so I did feel for him.

“He’s obviously come from a big club, and there’s no doubting his talent and we did see it in flashes.

“I think Ross County away was his first game if memory serves me correct he scored and had some good touches.

“But after that he got thrown into the deep end a little bit against Celtic and he got lost.

“I don’t think he maybe realised how big a fixture it was. I did feel for him because there is a great player there, it’s just about showing it on a consistent basis and I don’t think we quite saw that for someone so young.

“So it would be nice to see him come back and flourish and show the player he actually can be.”

Signed for an initial £19m from Man United from Serie A Atalanta [BBC Sport], Amad’s exposure to first team football has been minimal and it’s clear he still needs to bridge that gap to first-teamer.

But after showing flashes of what he’s capable of at Ibrox – scoring three goals in 10 Premiership games – perhaps another season in Royal Blue would be best for Amad Diallo himself, Rangers and Man United.

Speaking of Rangers transfers, there’s some confusion surrounding reported interest in a Croatian striker currently plying his trade in Greece.
