Steven Gerrard has provided an update on Rangers’ reported pursuit of Aaron Hickey, as quoted by the Scotsman.

The Scottish Sun reported last week that inbound Gers Director of Football, Ross Wilson, would recommend that Rangers launch a £2 million bid for the Hearts defender in January.

The Daily Star than reaffirmed Rangers’ supposed interest, but claimed Manchester City are the frontrunners in the race for the 17-year-old’s signature.

However, Gerrard has poured cold water on any Ibrox interest in Hickey or Everton defender Lewis Gibson.

Rangers boss Gerrard addresses transfer speculation

“Lewis Gibson isn’t on the radar, it’s just speculation,” said the Gers boss, as quoted by the Scotsman. “The kid at Hearts, Hickey, is the same. Craig Levein has had to answer that question but he shouldn’t because there’s nothing in it.”

Verdict

It always seemed a little far-fetched that Ross Wilson would have already decided to recommend a player to Rangers, despite not yet taking up his role as Ibrox Director of Football.

£2 million is a lot of money to be spending on a 17-year-old as well, especially one with only nine Scottish Premiership appearances to his name.

Due to a reported clause in his contract, Celtic would receive 30% of any future transfer fee, too [Scottish Sun].

For now, it looks as though Stevie G is happy with his lot at left-back.

Borna Barisic has shown remarkable improvements of late, while in Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday, there is some reasonable if unspectacular cover available for that berth.
