Greg Docherty with yet another strike for Shrewsbury Town

Greg Docherty was described as “the best player on the pitch” as he inspired Shrewsbury Town to a 2-0 win over Plymouth in League One.

In a match that lacked inspiration, Docherty was it. He scored the opener from just outside the box, lashing it into the bottom corner after some great work cutting inside.

The dynamic midfielder also left a huge impression on journalist Lewis Cox. The Shropshire Star reporter was hugely impressed with the midfielder and couldn’t speak highly enough about him in his post-match review.

That’s all well and good, as long as he doesn’t get used to it. Docherty could be a hugely important player for Rangers in the future. That’s six Doc’s got from 20 matches in midfield.

He’ll be like a new signing when he returns next season.

And it will be next season.

With the athletic midfielder flourishing down South, there’s no need to take him back up to Scotland just yet. Unless Gerrard can promise him gametime.

At 22 he must be playing week-in week-out. But if he can continue making an impression with Shrewsbury Town then there’s no doubt he stake a claim at Ibrox from next year.

Of course, it’s a different level. But making that step up and achieving his dream of being central to Rangers’ plans and first team is what drives Docherty.

The former Hamilton man won’t be coming back up to Scotland to sit on the bench.

If we do recall him, we better expect to play him. But I can’t see him getting the same gametime up here this season.

For the time being at least, Doc must focus on continuing to flourish as a first teamer for The Shrews.
