Gerrard to his players: Start doing it on the road

Steven Gerrard’s away form with Rangers is something he’s told his Rangers players to get improving.

Rangers were thoroughly convincing 3-1 winners against Hearts today at Ibrox. Goals from Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, and Scott Arfield secured a massive three points for the Gers against Craig Levein’s previously unbeaten Jambos.

Hearts had been top of the table, and the victory for the Gers now cools some of the title-talk coming from Edinburgh.

The win was huge for so many reasons, but Gerrard has shown his perfectionist side by emphasising the need to pick up the performances away from Govan. Speaking to Rangers’ official website after the match, Gerrard stressed the need for away form.

“I think the last four days we’ve had two fantastic results and two top performances. The challenge for us now is can we go and replicate that on the road and that starts with Hamilton when we come back.

“But a lot of players deserve a break and we need to get a lot of players back up to speed. We’ll have a game behind closed doors to try and get some fitness into them lads and then we go again after the break. But it is nice to be able to breath after two very good wins.

“They are playing some really stunning stuff, we’re creating chances and we’re taking our goals. So things are looking really good at Ibrox and now I’m desperate for us to go and show the real Rangers on the road.”

The Real Rangers

Gerrard mentioned it there – the real Rangers. That’s exactly what Gers fans are wanting to see from their side on the road. Too often this season it’s been like watching different teams at both Ibrox compared to away from home.

When this Rangers side leave Govan, there seems to be a nervousness to go out and play their real game. Instead, there’s a hesitancy to them going forward and a failure to get bodies into the opposition penalty area.

We all know that Rangers are at their best on the front foot, and Gerrard understands this. It’s now about finding a way to make sure Rangers enforce their game on the opposition when they leave Ibrox.

If Rangers and Gerrard can find that formula to get the players firing away from home, success will be on the cards. It already looks like a season where consistency is going to be what wins a team the title. Rangers have a huge opportunity to be that side.

With Celtic seemingly getting back to form with a 6-0 win over St Johnstone, it’s even more imperative that Rangers get to grips away from home. Once they do, Gerrard will have formed a side that’s extremely difficult to stop.
