Gerrard praises his side's efforts against 'devastated' Maribor

Rangers are just 180 minutes of football away from the group stages of the Europa League after their 0-0 second leg draw with Maribor last night.

Steven Gerrard’s men successfully protected their 3-1 first leg lead, aided my some heroics from goalkeeper Allan McGregor; most notably a late penalty that the Scotsman repelled.

Gerrard praised his players for their performance but also laid into Rangers’ Slovenian opponents, who were in the Champions League group stage last season.

No respect

He told the club’s official website: “We have knocked a Champions League team out of the qualifiers and they are devastated. They had confidence, they had ego coming into this game and they had no respect for us.

“I am delighted with my players, and I thought every single one of them to a man did the job we asked of them. My players have proved over two legs we are better than Maribor; and that pleases me and that gives me great confidence going forward.

“These players are giving everything for me and everything for the fans and more. I can’t speak highly of them enough. There are individuals there who deserve a lot of credit. Allan McGregor was a mountain for us tonight; what a man.

“Connor Goldson, again was top class. But everyone, collectively as a group, every single person put in a great performance.”

Gerrard is clearly very pleased with how good his new-look team look already. It is a test to go away from home in Europe and get something and they did exactly that.

He is also building that siege mentality again. He is telling his players they are proving people wrong; which he will hope they carry on as the season progresses.

The Liverpool icon is elated his side have beaten a Champions League standard side, and rightly so.
