Rangers midfield trio Ryan Jack, Lassana Coulibaly and Scott Arfield are available for tomorrow night’s second leg against Maribor.

It’s a major boost for Rangers chances. In Gerrard’s system, this three are his strongest combination. Rangers set up with one defensive midfielder in front of the defender, and two midfielders spread in front.

Coulibaly an astute signing

In front of the defence, Coulibaly has power, pace and energy. In his early Rangers career he has rarely put a foot wrong. He looks like a major find from Steven Gerrard and Director of Football Mark Allen and as such will be a major player in the team. Talk of signing the loanee permanently will rumble on for months.

Ryan Jack a major part of Gerrard’s plans

Ryan Jack’s form and application has been publicly praised by Gerrard for his performances and his application. Prior to the injury which kept him out for seven months last season, Jack’s start was also frustrating.

Four sendings off in the first few months scuppered Jack and questions on discipline were coupled with questionable referee. Now, Jack looks like one of the key men in Gerrard’s team and it’s important he gets a run.

Scott Arfield an experienced and valuable presence

Scott Arfield has been the player of the three who’s quietly went about his business. It’s what we expected. Over 100 Premier League appearances and a reputation for composed performances means signing the versatile midfielder on a free could prove a steal. An experienced head and could be a massive player this season.

Youngsters Ejaria, Rossiter and McCrorie as backups, with the experienced Dorrans still in the squad, Rangers look strong across the three midfield positions.

But the three who’ve been cleared to play on Thursday are far and away the strongest options in the Rangers midfield.
