Ally McCoist, like almost every other Rangers fan, has been beaming ear-to-ear following last night’s result in Maribor.

The club’s record goalscorer has been full of praise for the job done by Steven Gerrard. It’s difficult not to be.

Last night’s grinding 0-0 draw in Maribor was a spirited, commanding and best-of-all collective performance by the Teddy Bears.

Gerrard is building a team that supporters can be proud of. Being one of the biggest, McCoist sees Gerrard’s squad as one of the best Rangers teams in years. Especially defensively.

Speaking to talkSPORT McCoist said:

“The one really encouraging thing I would say is they look solid defensively.

I was absolutely delighted when Maribor missed their penalty as the boys really deserved their clean sheet.

I think there is a real solidity about Rangers, particularly at the back, that we’ve not seen in a number of years.

Steven Gerrard will be very, very pleased and quietly happy with himself with the start to the season.”

What’s unbelievable is that Gerrard, McAllister, Michael Beale and co. have only been the job 10 weeks. These players have had to put up with a revolving door, new arrivals and new culture. The new signings, to a man have looked superb.

Ally McCoist also went on to praise Gerrard for commenting on the cockiness of the Maribor camp. McCoist said it was a European thing, but praised Gerrard for being respectful in the run up.

Next up for Rangers in the Europa League are FC Ufa of Russia.
