Alfredo Morelos has never been far from the headlines since joining Rangers.
Between the heavy media pressure and often confusing, unmerited disdain from some quarters in Scotland, the young Colombian’s form has admittedly been largely indifferent. Not – it seems – anymore.
Barring the ludicrous sending off on Sunday, which has since been correctly repealed, Morelos has led the line, found the net, and got everyone singing his name.
The young Colombian has been cast into the public eye almost since the day he arrived from HJK Helskini. It’s natural, Rangers get press, but he’s been unusually cast as a pantomime villain at times.
How he’s handled it has only made us love him more.
Rather than bear that burden, Morelos is wearing it. And the fans are responding.
The gritty, in-the-face-of-adversity attitude that’s become synonymous with supporters has at times been greatly over-exaggerated. That said, no-one characterises this more than Alfredo Morelos on the pitch.
Maybe because it too has been greatly over-exaggerated with him.
At times it does seem as if many are waiting for him to fail and take much more pleasure in an off-day or an off-the-ball incident that they do in his success. It’s strange. Scottish football should be excited to have such a clearly talented and charismatic player in our midst.
Even if he remains unpolished, he also offers so much more than goals with superb hold-up play and the ability to go past a man.
Questions are constantly raised in Scotland over his attitude, his ability and his application. Although, if you were at Ibrox on Thursday, you’d never know it.
Alfredo Morelos, our own Buffalo Soldier, isn’t seeking redemption. He’s just wants to prove his worth to the fans.
As long as he keeps producing – and what a performance it was on Thursday night – even the most critical of quarters outside Ibrox will eventually have to give it to him.
He’s not quite convinced everyone yet that he’s a goalscoring genius. But make no mistake. He’s convinced everyone at Ibrox that he knows exactly what it means to us.
