Rangers appear to have missed out on the chance to sign Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe, with the striker effectively ruling out a transfer deadline day move this summer.
The veteran hitman has been with the Cherries for a year after moving down south from relegated Sunderland. But he has failed to light up the Vitality Stadium as expected, with strong competition up front from the likes of Callum Wilson and Josh King.
Rangers had been linked with a loan move for Defoe earlier in the window, courtesy of a report from the Scottish Sun, but a moved never materialised and Gerrard got busy securing other deals.
The Gers have since signed up Umar Sadiq from Roma on loan, but the squad is looking a little light on strikers, but any hopes of Gerrard going back in for Defoe appear to be dead.
The ex-England striker said, as quoted in a new report by the Scottish Sun: “I saw some of that, but again, that’s just something I’ve always had.
“Even when I’ve been at clubs and played every game, you’ll always find something, especially with social media now. I’ve played with Steven Gerrard and we’ve got the same agent.
“I’m just like everyone else, you see things on Twitter and in the papers, but that’s it really.”
That’ll make for a shame for some Rangers fans, who know Defoe is still relatively fresh despite his advancing years having played less football since his switch to the south coast.
He would have been a fantastic figure to have around the club as well as being a great player, and would arguably have worked well with his former England teammate Gerrard since there are only three years separating them.
It could have been a great move for Rangers but, for one reason or another, it has not happened this time around, and Gerrard will now have to place his faith in Sadiq and Alfredo Morelos, and hope he can get someone else in within before next week’s deadline.
