Rangers could finally get their wish and VAR could be introduced to Scottish football by the end of the year after an SPFL statement.

But there is some controversy surrounding the move given that the Scottish game’s professional members’ body will be giving all 42 clubs the chance to vote.

Rangers – the nation’s biggest and most vocal advocates of the technology – will need 75% of clubs from every league to vote on the introduction of VAR in Scotland.

That’s despite the fact VAR will only be used in the Scottish Premiership.

SPFL could implement VAR next season

In another twist to the madness of the SPFL and their unconventional governance of football in the country, if given the go-ahead the technology will also be introduced halfway through next season.

The plan is to introduce VAR after the World Cup in Qatar, midway through the Scottish Premiership campaign.

The vote is currently set to take place between all member clubs on Tuesday 19th April.

“The Scottish Professional Football League can today confirm that there will be a vote on Tuesday 19 April on whether to introduce VAR to the cinch Premiership,” reads an SPFL statement.

“The SPFL has this afternoon circulated a resolution to all 42 member clubs, who will be asked to vote on its introduction at the SPFL General Meeting on that date.

“The resolution requires 75% of cinch Premiership clubs, 75% of clubs in the cinch Championship and 75% of clubs in cinch Leagues 1 and 2 combined to vote in favour.

“If the resolution is passed, the target implementation date for VAR will be following conclusion of the Qatar World Cup 2022, which takes place between 21 November and 18 December this year.”
