Rangers v St Mirren – Player ratings as Todd Cantwell shines

Rangers manager Philippe Clement was determined to put two consecutive draws behind him against St Mirren.

It didn’t seem that long ago that Steven Davis was in charge as the interim Gers boss and guided his side to a comfortable 3-0 win away from Ibrox.

The last two Rangers performances have seen a few players have shocking displays but who stood out against St Mirren and did anyone let the side down?

Rangers player ratings

Jack Butland – 8

Not just the signing of the summer but, fast becoming one of the best signings ever made by the club considering he arrived on a free transfer.

At 0-0, he makes a stunning stop to bail John Lundstram out of trouble.

James Tavernier – 7

Has been more conservative in recent performances and always benefits from having a consistent partner in front off him, especially if they are a natural winger like Ross McCausland.

A good knock down for Todd Cantwell was close to being an assist.

Borna Barisic – 7

Seems to be starting games with more intent but needs to maintain it for the full 90 minutes, his delivery is so good that when he gets to the by-line he always causes problems.

It wasn’t quite as effective today though and could’ve done with putting more pace on his crossing.

Connor Goldson – 7

We can’t say for certain if he would have made a difference against Aris Limassol but his presence in the defence is always a welcome sight.

Steady and consistent, dealt with the physical presence of St Mirren at set plays/

Leon Balogun – 7

Back in the team after his Europa League squad omission forced absence, seems to be Philippe Clement’s first choice partner for Goldson.

John Lundstram – 7

In a word – unfussy.

Kep possession well other than one moment where Butland had to save the day.

Tom Lawrence – 7

A much better option alongside Lundstram, when Cantwell dropped, he moved higher.

Always looked to play forwards and, fully fit, will be perfect for this role.

Todd Cantwell – 9

Man of the match. Dropped a bit too deep at times in the first half but was pivotal in most good moves and worked tirelessly.

Showed why he should be in his preferred number ten role and certainly ahead of Sam Lammers.

Ross McCausland – 8

A constant threat on the right-hand side, carried the ball from deep, linked play and created space for others.

Growing with every game and it’s his jersey to lose.

Abdallah Sima – 9

Two excellent finishes in a textbook Abdallah Sima performance

Scrappy at times but knows where the goal is, great run and composure shown for his second.

Cyriel Dessers – 5

Should have scored, took too long on a couple of occasions when he could have shot or played in a teammate.

Credit is due for his involvement in the opener, more of that and he will win the fans back.

Substitutes

Danilo – 7

Looked sharper than Dessers and keen to make an impact.

Rabbi Matondo – 6

Not enough time to make a real impact.

Ridvan Yilmaz – 6

Not enough time to make a real impact.

Sam Lammers and Dujon Sterling – on late.
