Lewis Mayo proves the Rangers connection never leaves you as he celebrates a famous Kilmarnock victory over Celtic.

The Rugby Park side have blown the Scottish Premiership title race wide open with their second victory of the season over Celtic.

Ex-Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes leads the Kilmarnock side as manager and earned a second Brendan Rodgers scalp of the season in the 2-1 victory.

But Rangers fans will note the heroic performance and celebrations of Lewis Mayo, the centre-back central to what proved a famous day for Killie.

It’s little wonder Derek McInnes was recently tipping the defender to make the Scotland squad.

Lewis Mayo revels in Kilmarnock victory

Rangers Academy graduate Lewis Mayo has taken to social media to indulge in the celebrations as Kilmarnock defeated Celtic.

The Ayrshire star was part of the Killie team who knocked Celtic out of the League Cup earlier in the season and was tremendous in this potentially pivotal Premiership victory.

The defender initially shared Kilmarnock’s official X message regarding the victory before going on to share some images of the result with the caption “enjoyed that one”.

It was a heroic performance from the 23-year-old centre-back and Lewis Mayo’s post-match celebrations will not be lost on Ibrox supporters.

Kilmarnock blow open Scottish Premiership title race

It’s not just Lewis Mayo who is celebrating Kilmarnock’s victory over Celtic with Rangers now within two points of their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish Premiership.

After defeating Dundee 3-1 this weekend, an injury-hit Ibrox side are stumbling through December still on track in four competitions.

Ahead of what is set to be an almighty week in Glasgow, where Rangers face a Europa League defining trip to Betis and the League Cup Final v Aberdeen, this is a very timely boost.

At the moment Rangers are finding that little bit extra amid the challenge of a relentless fixture list and mounting injury problems.

But if the club are to sustain a title challenge heading into the January break then they must continue to grind out those results on Scottish soil.

After this almighty week, Rangers have Scottish Premiership clashes with St Johnstone (H), Motherwell (A) and Ross County (H) before a crucial trip to Celtic Park.

As Lewis Mayo and Kilmarnock celebrate a legendary victory over Celtic, Rangers must navigate a tricky fortnight to ensure the ex-Ibrox centre-back’s efforts aren’t in vain.

Lewis Mayo came through the youth ranks at Rangers but never played for the first team, enjoying loan spells at Partick Thistle (twice), Dunfermline and Kilmarnock before his permanent move to Rugby Park.
