How Rangers could clinch the Premiership title at the weekend

There has been plenty of talk about Rangers winning the Premiership title at Parkhead, but Steven Gerrard’s side could be crowned champions well before 21 March.

The Gers had the benefit of a free weekend following their Europa League Round of 32 second-leg clash against Royal Antwerp and Celtic managed to reduce the gap between the top two with a narrow 1-0 victory over Aberdeen on Saturday.

However, we’re now at such an advanced stage of the season that two more strong Rangers performances and one more showing of weakness from their rivals could bring the whole thing to an end.

Steven Gerrard’s side face Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Wednesday evening and St Mirren at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon, giving them the chance to secure another six points before Celtic play again.

Should the Gers take maximum points, they will stretch their lead to a whopping 21 points and Celtic will have to defeat Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday to keep the title race alive.

Each team will only have 18 points to play for after the coming weekend and if the Gers keep their side of the bargain, a defeat would leave the Hoops trailing by 21 points, while a draw would still leave them 20 behind.

A win and a draw would also be enough for Rangers if Celtic were to lose as the gap would be 19 points.

It’s remarkable that the title could be decided before the split but it’s a reflection of the ruthlessness that the Gers have shown throughout the season.

With eight matches remaining in their campaign, there’s still a chance of Gerrard’s team going unbeaten, while, as has been the case for some time, it’s very much a question of when rather than if their 55th top-flight title is secured.

Rangers have also excelled in Europe this season, earning millions of pounds of prize money in the process.
