Hibs have sacked boss Shaun Maloney after the ex-Celtic star’s poor start to life as a first-team manager, with ex-Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson amongst the names tipped to replace him.
The decision to sack Maloney has come as a surprise to some with the ex-Belgium coach highly regarded in the game.
However, the 39-year-old’s unpragmatic approach to how the game should be played has ultimately cost him his job with Hibs tumbling to the bottom half of the table ahead of the split fixtures.
The 2-1 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Hearts appears to have been the final nail in the coffin and now five months after replacing Jack Ross, Hibs are now looking to replace Shaun Maloney.
Kevin Thomson linked with vacant Hibs job after Shaun Maloney sacking
Ex-Hibs defender David Gray will take charge at Easter Road until the end of the season and he is amongst the frontrunners being tipped for the top job beyond the summer.
The Edinburgh Evening News list Gray as second-favourite for the job with Ross County boss Malky MacKay the favourite and ex-Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson – who joined the Gers from Hibs – as third favourite.
Currently the manager of Kelty Hearts, Thomson has guided the club to the League Two title and earned them promotion the third tier.
The former Gers star has made no bones about his ambition to one day lead Rangers and this may well be a stepping stone in his determination to do that.
There are plenty of other names reportedly in the running too, with ex-Real Madrid defender Jonathon Woodgate, ex-Dundee boss James McPake and Celtic coach John Kennedy all mentioned.

Rangers fans will have one eye on the situation at Hibs given they are Scottish Premiership rivals but also considering the situation surrounding Thommo.
But it does appear that any suggestion Kevin Thomson could take over at Hibs is for now a little ambitious with the Daily Record claiming the club wants an experienced head to takeover.
Meanwhile, Rangers have dropped a major summer transfer hint ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer at Ibrox.
