Rangers Scottish Cup clash against Stranraer could offer Barjonas chance

On Sunday evening, Rangers were drawn at home to League One outfit Stranraer, in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup [ScottishFA.co.uk].

It’s a matchup that very much suits the Gers.

Following the winter break, it’ll be a nice opportunity to give fringe players opportunities safe in the knowledge that the lower league opposition shouldn’t pose too much of a threat.

One player in particular who could benefit is Jamie Barjonas.

The 20-year-old midfielder recently signed a contract extension at Ibrox [Rangers.co.uk] which he’s earned through some stellar performances this season.

He spent 2018/19 away on loan, first at Bury and then at Raith Rovers, but he’s stayed put over the first half of this campaign and has proven his worth with the Colts and Development sides, earning praise from Graeme Murty [Glasgow Evening Times].

In fact, he’s already faced and scored against Stranraer this season. The Colts defeated the Blues 2-0 in the second round of the Challenge Cup in August, with the young prospect’s strike securing the victory following a Josh McPake opener.

That’s one of three goals Barjonas has netted in a five-game cup run where he’s performed at a consistently high level.

Given that he already has nine first-team appearances under his belt and recently signed that new deal, it’s highly likely he’ll be handed an opportunity to show what he can do in this one.

It must be tough to see a way into the fold at Ibrox with internationals like Davis, Jack and Kamara ahead of you in the pecking order.

Yet, ties like this will offer a glimmer of hope and the exciting prospect of a first competitive outing since December 2017.
