Rangers fans blown away by Calvin Bassey's physique in pre-season training snaps

Rangers fans have heaped praise on Calvin Bassey for his physique after he tweeted a series of snaps from pre-season training.

2020/21 was Bassey’s first campaign at Ibrox following a permanent move from Leicester City’s U23s.

It was a mixed maiden season, as he impressed at times and contributed to a hugely significant title win but also made a costly error in a League Cup defeat to St Mirren and was involved in a high-profile breach of Covid restrictions.

In a recent RangersTV interview, Steven Gerrard hinted that several players had enjoyed their summer breaks a little too much, but it’s unlikely that Bassey was one of those.

The 21-year-old should be eager to impress after unnecessarily attracting negative attention to himself last season and besides, he looks in excellent condition.

On Sunday afternoon, he tweeted a lion emoji followed by “good first week”, attaching four photos to the post.

Bassey is doing something different in each training snap, including stretching and taking part in one of the infamous pre-season running drills.

He looks lean and powerful in all four, though, and plenty of supporters were impressed.

Here’s a selection of reactions to his post:

Bassey is set to begin the 2021/22 campaign as the club’s backup left-back, assuming that Borna Barisic remains at Ibrox.

He’s under contract until 2024 so his future is secure, but he’ll be hoping to press for more playing time given that he only saw a little over 700 minutes of action last season.

With Barisic not yet back at Rangers following Euro 2020 duty with Croatia, Bassey is likely to start Monday’s first pre-season friendly against Partick Thistle, which is being shown live on RangersTV.
