Todd Cantwell makes statement after controversial Rangers moment

Todd Cantwell cut a frustrated figure on Thursday night after Philippe Clement hooked the Rangers playmaker before the referee’s whistle for half-time had been blown.

There were questions as to what approach the Gers boss would take for the visit to Ibrox of St Mirren but any doubts were answered about who should be the Light Blues number ten.

It would have been easy for the manager to show who is boss and keep Todd Cantwell on the bench, however, Clement has shown that he can accept when he has made a mistake and change his Rangers team.

Todd Cantwell has proven his Rangers number ten qualities

Against Aris Limassol, the idea was there, but the execution was awful.

The gaffer was let down by several shocking performances in his squad from Sam Lammers, Jose Cifuentes and Cantwell in particular, all playing in key positions.

It was justified given his reluctance to put too much pressure, too early, on Ross McCausland but, against St Mirren at Ibrox, there was an emphatic response.

Todd Cantwell could have sulked, instead, he created Rangers two goals and was determined to be the main character in a positive way from the first whistle.

A half-time adjustment from Clement saw Cantwell make even more of an impact in the second half and the build-up to Abdallah Sima’s second goal is confirmation of who should be our creator in chief.

The frustrating thing is, after six goals and four assists in the league last season after signing in January, everyone knew where this was.

We also had Ianis Hagi, Tom Lawrence and Alex Lowry capable of playing there too.

Which makes the signing of Sam Lammers for a reported £3m all the more puzzling.

He has rarely played there this season, mainly because of Lammers, but Todd Cantwell, even in a performance where he could improve, created two goals for Rangers.

Lammers, in 25 games, has created just one.

Cantwell should be the player that Philippe Clement builds his attack and his team around, hopefully, he has seen what we already knew.
