Rangers pressure building on Ryan Kent ahead of imminent return

As Rangers toiled to a 2-2 draw with Aberdeen at Ibrox the match was somewhat symbolic of the Gers’ season so far.

An error-strewn performance defined by a lack of urgency, a lack of creativity and a lack of key first team leaders.

Rangers have not had a settled side all season and it shows but the problems undoubtedly run a bit deeper than just Steven Gerrard’s inability to pick from his full complement.

The fact that when some players are out those in behind can’t suitably cover is a problem for a club hoping to play a 60-game season and whilst absences are relevant, this should not so readily expose us.

Whilst it says something about a lack of strength-in-depth, it says more about our inaction in the transfer market.

That said, had the likes of Filip Helander be available he could lighten the load caused by the overuse of Leon Balogun or, dare I say it, allow a somewhat pre-occupied and out-of-sorts Connor Goldson time on the sidelines.

If Ryan Jack had been available – arguably the club’s most well-rounded midfielder – then issues with bite, determination and leadership in the middle of the park would be impacted if not resolved.

But the main absence which is hitting Rangers at present – as evidenced by a major lack of goals in the side – is that of £7m ex-Liverpool man Ryan Kent.

The most expensive player in the Rangers squad for a reason, on his day Kent is the most talented player in the division and whilst Steven Gerrard’s side have few excuses, Kent’s absence would be felt by any side.

But amid a woeful run of form, the player’s imminent return could not be into a team more in need of his direct, creative qualities.

The entire thing has added an extra pressure to Ryan Kent who is under increasing pressure to inspire that spark we’ve been searching all season to find.
