Rangers may have been handed an unexpected transfer boost from one of the most compelling games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s opening days, and the player in question could be heading to Ibrox this summer.

Japan’s remarkable 2-2 draw with the Netherlands on Sunday was one of the tournament’s early talking points, as the Blue Samurai came from behind twice to hold Ronald Koeman’s side to a draw.

Among those involved was a reported Rangers target, and his performance off the bench will have done nothing to dampen Ibrox interest.

With Derek McInnes set to be installed as the Gers head coach and a squad rebuild well underway, the World Cup provides a timely and highly visible platform for players on the club’s radar to make their case.

What would your concerns be about Derek McInnes replacing Danny Rohl?

Takehiro Tomiyasu display adds intrigue to Rangers interest

The Daily Record recently noted that Rangers may be keeping tabs on Takehiro Tomiyasu‘s situation this summer, and the former Arsenal defender came off the bench as Japan produced a stunning fightback to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands.

Tomiyasu was without a club after he terminated his contract with the Gunners at the end of the 2024-25 season, but joined Ajax in December, although that deal is set to run out at the end of June.

That means the versatile defender is available on a free transfer this summer, and the question now is whether McInnes shares the club’s potential admiration for the 27-year-old, and whether his quality and profile fit the incoming head coach’s vision for the squad.

Tomiyasu’s versatility is his greatest asset, as he is capable of operating at right-back or centre-back, offering the kind of positional flexibility that every manager craves in a modern squad.

His Arsenal pedigree gives him Premier League proven credentials, and his World Cup involvement only adds to his profile.

Should the Gers pursue Tomiyasu?

The case is compelling on paper, but Rangers must be realistic about the competition for a player of his standing.

A strong World Cup with Japan will only increase his market value and attract interest from clubs with significantly deeper pockets.

If McInnes wants him, the Ibrox club need to move quickly and decisively.
