Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has complimented current Ibrox star Ryan Kent, describing the winger as “World-class” following his recent performances.

Kent has struggled this season, only scoring two goals in all competitions, although he has provided 14 assists. The Ibrox side needs to see more from the player who can be frustrating, with one excellent match followed by a series of poor performances.

Johnstone knows what it’s like to succeed at Rangers, scoring the winner in the 1970 League Cup final at only 16 years of age, he went on to win 13 other major honours for the Gers and became an icon in the process.

Derek Johnstone lavishes praise on Rangers star Ryan Kent

The praise from Johnstone should surely be enough to give Kent a boost in confidence and hopefully, he can shine in the last couple of months.

“In the last few games, he’s been absolutely world-class,” Johnstone said [LiverpoolEcho].

“He’s one of these players where it depends what mood he’s in, whether he plays well or not.

“But all of a sudden he’s got the bit between his teeth and he’s looked as though he’s unplayable at times.

“He’s playing out of his skin at the moment, hopefully, it continues.”

The Englishman signed for the club on a season-long loan deal in 2018 under Steven Gerrard and quickly became a fan’s favourite despite the poor performances from the side.

This was enough for the club to splash out on the winger, with a deal reported to be worth £7.5m convincing Jurgen Klopp to sell the player.

The weight of expectation was massive and his first year saw him score important goals against Celtic and Braga.

His performances were fantastic last season as the club won arguably our finest ever league title, scoring 13 goals and adding in 15 assists in all competitions.

A few injury issues this campaign has halted his progress, but DJ is right, when the 25-year-old is on form, he is excellent and can trouble even the best defenders.

Meanwhile, Rangers could benefit from major format changes in the UEFA Champions League from season 2024/2025.
