Rangers are looking for a new goalkeeper this summer as they want to upgrade on Jack Butland, who has been their number one in recent years.
While the Englishman has fared decently, he has not been consistent with his performances, and there have been moments where he has let his team down.
Under Derek McInnes, the Gers want to win the league and are looking for a number one who can help them achieve that goal.
Rangers want to sign Pierce Charles…
What does this mean for Jack Butland? 🤔
Rangers missed the chance to sign David Raya when he was at Blackburn Rovers
Charlie Mulgrew revealed that between 2016 and 2018, he told Rangers’ goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart to take a look at David Raya, who back then was on the books at Blackburn Rovers.
Stewart was also Scotland’s goalkeeping coach, which is how he knew Mulgrew, and the recommendation was made as Gers were looking for a new stopper.
Raya, who then moved to Brentford for just £2.5m in 2019, was not signed by the Light Blues, something that they undoubtedly will regret now.
How much can Rangers expect from Jack Butland’s sale?
He is now in the final year of his contract…
Mulgrew said: “I did know he was a really good goalkeeper and somebody that could go and have a great career.
“I actually recommended him to the Scotland goalkeeping coach who at the time was at Rangers, and I recommended him.
“He mentioned he needed a goalie and I said, ‘Our goalie at Blackburn’s really good, young guy coming through, David Raya.’
“And then we sold him to Brentford for two and a half million, which I couldn’t actually believe that we’d let him go for that little money.”

Raya has now been called the ‘best keeper in the world’
Raya moved to Arsenal from Brentford back in 2024, and since then has won the Premier League Golden Glove in all three seasons.
He played a key role in helping the Gunners win their first league title in 22 years and also reach the Champions League final.
The Spaniard’s teammate Kai Havertz waxed lyrical over the 30-year-old as he labelled him the best goalkeeper in the world.
He said: “Unbelievable.
“I think he is still underestimated in the world of football, but for me, the last two seasons, the best keeper in the world.
“He’s outstanding. He has saved us so many times and we’re very glad to have him.”
