Rangers boss Gerrard could deploy mercurial winger as St Mirren revenge sought

Steven Gerrard has hinted that he will make changes to the Rangers team for the Premiership fixture against St Mirren on Wednesday afternoon and Jordan Jones could benefit from the pre-Old Firm rotation.

Jones hasn’t featured for the Gers since appearing as a late substitute in a 2-0 home win over Livingston in October, but he’s available to face the Buddies after recently completing a seven-match SFA ban for breaching Covid-19 restrictions.

The Northern Ireland international has played a bit-part role since joining from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019, but Gerrard recently insisted both he and George Edmundson had a big part to play once their substantial punishments had been served [RangersTV] and his first opportunity could come in midweek.

Rangers travel to St Mirren Park seeking revenge after their shock League Cup exit there earlier in the month and Ryan Kent is likely to be one of those to drop out for a rest.

Gerrard can’t afford a repeat of the lacklustre attacking display produced by his side on their last visit to Paisley, though, and including Jones in the starting lineup or using him off the bench would give the opposition defence something different to think about.

The 26-year-old isn’t the most consistent winger around and he’ll be short of match fitness, but he’s sure to be highly motivated after so long out of action and he has pace to burn.

As demonstrated by his fine goal at Motherwell in September, he offers a threat in behind, while he also loves taking on full-backs and is prepared to get crosses into the box.

Brandon Barker will also be hoping for rare playing time, but Jones should play some part in Rangers’ important revenge mission as he looks to resurrect his Ibrox career.

The return of Jones and Edmundson is a boost for Gerrard, but the Gers boss has been dealt a double blow ahead of the trip to Paisley.
