Philippe Clement could fix goal shy problem with subtle position shift

Philippe Clement has a clear philosophy about how he wants his Rangers team to play football.

The Gers boss has an unfussy style where moving the ball quickly and dominating play is added to pressurising the opposition as much as is physically possible.

He doesn’t quite have the squad to do it yet, however, Philippe Clement might be considering a tweak to get more out of Rangers.

Will Philippe Clement consider tinkering with Rangers attack?

Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland are clearly well thought of by the manager and share similar traits – both good and bad.

Matondo is quicker but McCausland, maybe, just edges it when it comes to composure.

Both walked off the Easter Road pitch with assists to their names but this doesn’t really paint the full picture.

Against both Dumbarton and Hibs, they should have scored a few goals between them.

But, as we have seen in recent weeks, they clearly cause opposition defences problems and work hard out of possession.

It’s a similar story in the number nine role.

Cyriel Dessers has six goals and three assists in his 11 league games since Philippe Clement took charge but we now have Fabio Silva too, who is clearly a technically gifted player as shown by the way he controls the ball and links with teammates.

Deciding the strongest front three isn’t easy but Matondo’s pace gives him an edge similar to Silva’s over Dessers.

The thing with 21-year old Silva is that he has also played in wider positions in the past, mainly off the left, but it is an idea that should at least be tried.

McCausland is enjoying a fine breakthrough season but that is eight games in a row he has started now and it would do him good to take some of the pressure off him.

It might be that Ibrox is the best place to experiment, especially if Philippe Clement isn’t able to get the players he wants in for Rangers in this transfer window.

It’s the fine margins that win titles and scoring the first goal is always crucial, having players who are even 10% more clinical could be the difference.

Playing on the right, Silva could offer a similar threat to the one that Abdallah Sima has on the left up until he got injured but with greater control.

With such a lack of depth, anything is worth a try.
